Born on 12th February 1980, Radric Delantic Davis, professionally known as Gucci Mane, is arguably one of the most successful trap rappers of all time. He is one of the pioneers of the hip hop subgenre, Trap music, alongside fellow ATL-based rappers, Young Jeezy, and T.I. They brought this subgenre into life starting in the 2000s.

He was born at the time when his father was on the run from police for getting involved in deals relating to crack cocaine and heroin. His paternal grandma raised him since his mother was still a college student at the time of his birth. His older half-brother Victor introduced him to hip hop at a tender age by taking him to an LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, and Run-DMC concert. In the late 1980s, Gucci mane and his mother relocated to Atlanta, a community riddled with a significantly high crime rate. And as a result, he started dealing with various drugs while in junior high school. According to him narrating his experiences in an interview, he confirmed that he used his Christmas money in eighth grade to purchase crack cocaine to sell to people.

Gucci Mane was a brilliant and good student during his stay in high school. He was also popular among his peers. Despite drug dealing being his side hustle, Gucci didn’t use any of the drugs he was dealing in the first few years. In the mid-1990s, someone pointed a gun at him and robbed him of all his earnings. Because of that incident, he started carrying a handgun. In 1998, Gucci Mane graduated from high school with a GPA of 3.0 and a scholarship to further his education at Georgia Perimeter College. However, in 2001, undercover police caught him in possession of crack cocaine. As a result of this, he was expelled from college. Aside from his expulsion, he was sentenced to serve a 90-day jail term and probation at the country’s jail.

Musical Career

Following his first arrest, Gucci Mane decides to pursue a career in music. He released his first album, La Flare, which he distributed through East Atlanta via a run of 1000 CDs. Subsequently, he collaborated with Young Jeezy on the track So Icy, which Tommy Boys Records helped with the distribution. In 2005, Gucci Mane debuted with his independent album titled Trap House. This album found its way to the Top 20 on billboard hip hop/ R&B Album charts. Besides, it also climbed to the top spot on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album Chart.

Following Trap House was his second studio album, Hard to Kill, which he released in 2006. It featured the hit single “Freaky Gurl,” which experienced a vast reception among music lovers. It peaked at the 12th spot on the Hot Rap Tracks chart. He released his third and fourth studio albums, Trap a Thon and Back to the Trap House, in 2007.  In 2010, Gucci released another studio album, The State vs Radric Davis.

Gucci Mane has worked with several famous musicians all through his career. He collaborated with Rae Scremmurd on a single titled Black Beatles. They released it in November 2016. The song secured the top position on charts of multiple genres -not just hip hop or r&b – all genres. It was Gucci Mane’s first #1 as a featured artist, and it stayed at the top of various charts for seven weeks from late 2016 to early 2017.

As of today, we can affirm that Gucci Mane has led a successful musical career. He has 13 studio albums and 71 mixtapes to his name. He created his label, 1017 records, in 2007 and has collaborated with artists such as Chris Brown, Selena Gomez, Drake, Mariah Carey, Lil Wayne, and Marilyn Manson. Gucci published his autobiography in September 2017 in a book titled “The Autobiography of Gucci Mane.” During his stay in prison, he wrote the book, and Neil Martinez, a former editor for XXL magazine, authored it. This book went on to become a best seller in New York Times.

In 2019, Mane started working with the Italian fashion giant Gucci. The brand previously tried not to associate itself with him due to his image and criminal records. Personal Life

On October 17th, 2017, Gucci Mane got married to Keyshia Ka’oir. BET sponsored the wedding and created a 10-episode T.V. show based on the wedding titled “The Mane Event.” Gucci Mane proposed to his wife after his performance at a basketball game by Atlanta Hawks.

In his book, “The Autobiography of Gucci Mane,” he also revealed that he had a son born in 2007. He didn’t know of his existence until 2016.

Legal Issues

In mid-2005, Mane was attacked by some men in Decatur, Georgia. He ended up killing one of those men. People found the guy’s body behind a middle school. Gucci Mane later turned himself in and faced murder charges. However, he claims that his actions stemmed from his attempts to defend himself. As of early 2006, the murder charges were dropped.

In October 2005, Mane pleaded no contest to a charge of assault on a club owner. Even though the murder charges were dropped, he had to serve a six-month jail term for the assault. He was released in late January 2006.  Also, Gucci Mane served a jail term for not completing his community service hours.

He has been incarcerated and arrested multiple times since the start of the last decade. As of the beginning of this decade, 2020, his most recent release from jail was 2016.

Money Issues

In late 2013, Gucci Mane filed a lawsuit against Debra Antney and Waka Flocka Flame, his former manager, and her son. In the case, he claimed that the relevant parties robbed him and cheated him when he was their client. Gucci claimed Debra stole his pieces of jewelry and mishandled his assets. He claimed that he nearly went bankrupt with a few legal issues to deal with.
