Are you a fan of trap music? If the answer is yes, then this post is for you. We will share several facts about one of the most famous American rappers and the co-pioneer of the trap genre, Gucci Mane.
Born on 12th February 1980, Radric Delantic Davis, professionally known as Gucci Mane, is arguably one of the most successful trap rappers of all time. He is one of the pioneers of the hip hop subgenre, Trap music, alongside fellow ATL-based rappers, Young Jeezy, and T.I. They brought this subgenre into life starting in the 2000s.
He was born at the time when his father was on the run from police for getting involved in deals relating to crack cocaine and heroin. His paternal grandma raised him since his mother was still a college student at the time of his birth. His older half-brother Victor introduced him to hip hop at a tender age by taking him to an LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, and Run-DMC concert. In the late 1980s, Gucci mane and his mother relocated to Atlanta, a community riddled with a significantly high crime rate. And as a result, he started dealing with various drugs while in junior high school. According to him narrating his experiences in an interview, he confirmed that he used his Christmas money in eighth grade to purchase crack cocaine to sell to people.
Gucci Mane was a brilliant and good student during his stay in high school. He was also popular among his peers. Despite drug dealing being his side hustle, Gucci didn’t use any of the drugs he was dealing in the first few years. In the mid-1990s, someone pointed a gun at him and robbed him of all his earnings. Because of that incident, he started carrying a handgun. In 1998, Gucci Mane graduated from high school with a GPA of 3.0 and a scholarship to further his education at Georgia Perimeter College. However, in 2001, undercover police caught him in possession of crack cocaine. As a result of this, he was expelled from college. Aside from his expulsion, he was sentenced to serve a 90-day jail term and probation at the country’s jail.
Following his first arrest, Gucci Mane decides to pursue a career in music. He released his first album, La Flare, which he distributed through East Atlanta via a run of 1000 CDs. Subsequently, he collaborated with Young Jeezy on the track So Icy, which Tommy Boys Records helped with the distribution. In 2005, Gucci Mane debuted with his independent album titled Trap House. This album found its way to the Top 20 on billboard hip hop/ R&B Album charts. Besides, it also climbed to the top spot on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album Chart.
Following Trap House was his second studio album, Hard to Kill, which he released in 2006. It featured the hit single “Freaky Gurl,” which experienced a vast reception among music lovers. It peaked at the 12th spot on the Hot Rap Tracks chart. He released his third and fourth studio albums, Trap a Thon and Back to the Trap House, in 2007. In 2010, Gucci released another studio album, The State vs Radric Davis.
Gucci Mane has worked with several famous musicians all through his career. He collaborated with Rae Scremmurd on a single titled Black Beatles. They released it in November 2016. The song secured the top position on charts of multiple genres -not just hip hop or r&b – all genres. It was Gucci Mane’s first #1 as a featured artist, and it stayed at the top of various charts for seven weeks from late 2016 to early 2017.
